Today’s entry in the “Diary of a budding web developer“.

This is a recording of my first experience in migrating a wordpress website and back-end mysql database. My partner does this kind of thing all of the time in applications on other levels, but this was my first time.  I thought it would be worth the mention to post it here as some may find my spin on things useful. I actually did it with two installs, and will be repeating the same process with a different server.

I wanted to have an active running site working while I was doing the migration procedure as to make sure everything ran smoothly.  I also wanted to move one install up a level, ie: from mydomain.com/blog to mydomain.com. The benefits I found in doing things this way are listed in the notes at the bottom.

In addition to making a few new year’s resolutions, I’ve decided to take on Design Informer’s daily design challenge, to design something every day.  After reading the comments on Jad Limcaco’s post, part of me wanted to hold back and fall with the “too busy” crowd, but I chose to do it in a way that would incorporate other learning as well.  This gives me the opportunity to list things general things that I’m learning and working on — “diary style”, in addition to graphic images. All posts and tweets will be filed under #daily365, and will allow room for me to work on my writing skills and development related things.

There are various analytics services for tracking website traffic. Have you considered evaluating your social media marketing campaign’s impact?

This is great information to know if you are streaming twitter to various other social networking services.  This is important if you are running promotions or trying to figure out what words are getting people’s attention this is a great way to know which of your tweets are getting the most traffic.

With the holidays approaching, one can get pretty distracted with the buzz of activity going on.  I found that over the past week or so, my stress level increased and my mood slowly started to drift into perpetual gloom.  I didn’t see an end in sight. As my priorities grew and more tasks were dished out on my plate, a schedule evolved.  My time became noted in a little spreadsheet. I discovered that part of the problem was a. I’ve worked 27 hours in 2 days and b. I wasn’t taking time out for “me”.  This time of year it’s easy to get caught up in doing everything for everyone, especially if you come from a mindset of servitude. In the age of virtualization and mobility, I found myself struggling to maintain synchronized email, contacts lists and document sharing capabilities. After giving up on maintaining a backup of outlook .pst and thunderbird files, I migrated to gmail. I love gmail, it’s great — don’t get me wrong. I found that I felt a feeling of always having a “messy desk” per se, due to gmail’s “labeling” instead of “folders”. Well, after about a month of researching various hosted solutions including zimbra and axigen, I stumbled upon zoho via box.net believe it or not! I had been testing out various web based file sharing and viewing apps to check out what features they offered. I was pleased to find an app that allowed me to organize mail in a folder hierarchy and also could tie to multiple pop accounts — all for free!
